What Makes a Great Massage Candle?

In a world of designer lingerie and luxury sex toys, the humble massage candle is an outlier. Candles are cost-effective enough to pick one up on a whim but sensual enough to make any night feel special. We are huge fans and know that some of you are too. Our masseuses are sometimes asked if they can provide a hot wax massage or use a particular massage candle for the session.

The candle’s we choose to review range between £15 and £80 and feature high-quality ingredients. Later on, I’ll show you how you can make a massage candle at home and how to perform the therapy.

Safety First

The products listed below are of the best possible quality and won’t give you any issues. Proper massage candles are made to burn at a low temperature, so the oil is blissfully warm, not agonisingly hot. Take care when purchasing cheap or unknown brands on the internet as they might not be made to the same specification. There’s nothing sexy about a five-hour wait in A&E to get your burns treated!

Finally, always blow out the candle before you begin your massage. This will allow it to cool a little and has the added benefit of not being a fire risk. It’s easy to forget that little flame in the heat of passion, and it doesn’t take much to go from Hot in Herre to The Roof Is On Fire!

The Testing Process

This review has been put together over many months by testing the candles ourselves and with the help of our masseuses. We have many years of sensual massage experience, and many of our masseuses are qualified in massage, aromatherapy and sexological bodywork.

We are incredibly passionate about every aspect of sensual massage and loved trying these gorgeous candles. Please enjoy our reviews and give them a try for yourself!

Our Pick of the Best Massage Candles in 2023

Neom Massage Candle

An indulgent blend of Rapeseed Oil, Soybean Oil, Almond Oil, Cocoa Seed Butter, Baobab and Jojoba Oil, this candle packs a lot in. In our test, the essential oils helped to create a calm vibe in the room, and my skin felt softer than it has in years afterwards! The packaging and purchasing experience with Neom is all very stylish, and I loved the gift wrap option that my partner had chosen for me.

Orli Aphrodisia Therapy Massage Candle

This was the least expensive candle in our tests, but it still had a lot going for it. 100% plant-based, so Vegan friendly, and contains a healthy mix of Shea and Cocoa Butter enriched with Argan Oil, Jojoba and Almond Oil. The website advises you to use sparingly, as a little goes a long way. However, at this price, we suggest you apply generously to your body, your partners, the bath…

Our only slight gripe is that the packaging felt quite basic compared to its more upmarket competition. It’s more Anne Summers than Agent Provocateur.

Lelo Massage Candle

We reviewed this candle a few months ago as part of our ‘5 Best Sensual Massage Oils’ blog post so I won’t go into too much detail again today. Suffice to say we love this candle and everything else LELO make. If you’re in the market for seriously sexy sex toys and accessories, LELO should be top on your list.

Oskia Rose De Mai Massage Candle

Want to come up (ahem) smelling of roses? This is another all-natural candle, so there are no nasty carcinogens to worry about. The scent is incredible. I had so many compliments on my ‘perfume’ the weekend I tried this one. Sadly Oskia doesn’t make it in a scent, but if I have to slather myself in this stuff every Saturday morning, that’s fine with me!

Quite pricey at £53, but that does include free shipping.

The Ritual of Jing Massage Candle by Rituals

Despite sounding like a new instalment in the Star Wars franchise, this sexy little pot had me squirming with delight. I confess I giggled when I read it contained ‘Sacred Wood’, but the massage was incredible, and the lavender ensured I slept like a baby afterwards. My childish sense of humour aside, this is a really cool product that a few of our masseuses had recommended to me at our last meet-up.

Rituals make a massive range of products under the Ritual of Jing banner, so if you enjoy this one, you could really stock up on their products. The website is slick and sexy too. Just like your massage!

Coco De Mer Roseravished Candle

Coco De Mer is synonymous with high-end Lingerie, Sex Toys and Bondage equipment. This candle is part of their ‘intimate play’ range which consists of lubes, massage oils and something called orgasm balm (must try that one!).

Interestingly the candle comes with a little wooden spoon to help you apply it. A nice touch if you don’t fancy dipping your fingers into the recently alight candle. Unlike some other options, this candle is purely designed for sexy times. The fragrances will invigorate and stimulate you, so what starts as a massage might get much more heated quite quickly.

YesForLov Titilating Massage Candle

A self-described titillating scented candle from French pleasure seekers YesForLov. Our masseuse that tried this one loved the cute bow and the creamy but non-greasy texture. The fragrance is warm and spicy, and the product has a built-in spout so you can pour it generously onto the waiting body. Like the Rituals product, it also comes with a lid to extinguish the flame quickly and protect your beloved candle from dust.

Sun-Day of London Botanical Body Oil Massage Candle

Our most expensive candle on the list at £75 but you do get a lot for your money. First, this one looks like a piece of art. I couldn’t stop holding it with those melted curves. They should put it in the Tate Modern! The design is by the Japanese artist Ikuko Iwamoto, and it cleverly conceals the pouring spout into its graceful curves.

The hand-whipped wax feels super indulgent on the skin and leaves you nourished and moisturised. If you’ve got money to burn, this is your option—serious, sensual indulgence at a serious price.

My Viv Bergamot Massage Candle

And finally, we have this offering from My Viv. Wallet-friendly at just £20, but the design and packaging feel like a much more premium brand. I’m a sucker for Bergamot at any time and this one smells incredible. After using this one to nourish my skin after a long bath, I slept like a baby and woke up calm and refreshed.

Not 100% natural, but that’s my only slight gripe. The My Viv is perfect, especially if you’re getting into massage candles.

How to Give a Hot Candle Massage

So you read the reviews and made your choice, but now it’s arrived you aren’t sure what to do next. Here are our tips for giving a candle massage to your lucky partner.

  • Room Temperature. Ensure the room is warm enough to be naked for an extended period.
  • Light the candle 10 to 15 minutes before to allow the wax to melt and the gorgeous scent to fill the room.
  • Blow it out. The warmed oil should be the perfect temperature to pour directly onto your partner now but always test with a finger first. This is a reminder to be cautious when using cheap or unbranded candles.
  • Massage the oil into the skin, muscles and face.
  • What happens next is up to you! ?

What Are The Benefits Of Candle Massage?

To quickly recap from the reviews, the benefits of candle massage are:

  • Relaxed Muscles
  • Nourished and moisturised skin
  • Decreased stress
  • Powerful benefits of aromatherapy and essential oils
  • Lowers inflammation
  • Encourages intimacy with a partner

How to Make Your Own Massage Oil Candle

It’s January 2023 as I write this from my London apartment, and the country is in recession. So how can you make your massage oil candle to beat the budget and escape some of those January blues?

The ingredients:

  • Soy Wax Flakes
  • Coconut Oil
  • Almond Oil
  • Essential Oils (I chose Bergamot and Jasmine)
  • Candle Wicks
  • Heat Proof Pot or Jar. Mini ceramic plant pots work well.

Gently melt your Soy Wax flakes and coconut oil in a pan. Both these products won’t take long to melt, even at very low temperatures. This is essential to avoid nasty burns. Add the other ingredients and pour the mixture into your prepared jar with the wick.

Drop the wick with the little tab on the bottom to prepare the jar. You can hold it upright whilst pouring the wax in or keep it in place with kitchen tongs. Set aside to set for a few hours. You can prop the wick up with cutlery or whatever you have to hand.

Once set, trim the wick, and you’re good to go!
